FAQs
Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about club volleyball and Morongo Volleyball Club (MVC).
A: Club volleyball, also referred to as Junior Olympic volleyball or JO, is similar to other competitive travel sports such as club soccer or AAU basketball. USA Volleyball (USAV) is the national governing body and is responsible for local, regional, national and international rules and competition. USAV is divided into 40 regions. We fall under the Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA) which includes the southern portion of the state of California. Each year, players and teams must become members of USA Volleyball in order to participate in practice and tournament play. Morongo Volleyball Club is a junior girls club established to provide a competitive program committed to developing fundamental skills, building character and teamwork.
A: Club volleyball provides a higher level of training and competition for girls interested in learning and developing their skills after the school volleyball season has ended. The club season lasts approximately 6 months and consists of small teams. This allows players to receive many hours of focused skills training and development. Club volleyball requires a major commitment from both the player and parent.
A: If you want an honest answer, just ask our players and parents. Many of them will tell you that the increased skills, the enhanced abilities, the greater levels of confidence, as well as the newly acquired lifelong friendships are all PRICELESS. In addition, imagine going back to your middle or high schools KNOWING that you have received the best training, and KNOWING that you are more equipped to become an impact player. Imagine the effect this will have on your entire school season.
A: No. MVC is an independent club program that has no affiliation with any of the school volleyball programs. MVC is fortunate enough to use facilities belonging to the Morongo Unified School District for practices and have coaches from local high schools as well. We welcome players from all of the area middle and high schools. Our goal is to give our players the tools to become more competitive players for their school teams.
A: The policy of MVC is to leave that decision to the athlete and his or her parents or guardians. We expect 100% commitment to the program and the team, as do school coaches for their programs. When there are scheduling conflicts between school and club sports participation, this does not allow 100% commitment and can cause problems for everyone involved. Participating in multiple sports is also a major time commitment when trying to balance family, academic, social, and other activities. Please heavily consider the impact on you and your potential teammates if you plan on participating in club volleyball and a school sport during the same season.
A: Athletes are not guaranteed to play the same position that they do during their high school volleyball season. Coaches take into consideration many factors in selecting athletes to fill out their rosters, and may feel that the athlete and team would benefit by developing an athlete to play a different role for the club than she had previously performed during the school season. MVC reserves the right to switch player positions during the season as deemed necessary by our coaches.
A: MVC holds team tryouts in early November. Practices will start in January. Tournaments start in March and the season ends in May.
A: MVC practices at the Yucca Valley High School Gym, the East Gym on the Marine Base and at the Boys and Girls Club in Yucca Valley.
A: No. Players are guaranteed equal instruction and playing time during practices. Once the Mandatory Tournaments begin, coaches have the discretion of playing their most productive and effective team members while ensuring that all team members receive a fair amount of playing time respective to their positions and skill level. Playing time is also influenced by practice attendance, timeliness, attitude, work ethic, attendance and performance during tournament work assignments (scorekeeping, refereeing, line judging) and the status of club dues.
A: Yes. It is mandatory that each team provides scorekeeping, refereeing and line judging services as indicated on the playing schedule. All team members are required to stay until the work is completed and the team has been released by the Head Coach. Only in bonafide emergencies will players be excused from these duties. Players who do not abide by this rule will forfeit playing time in the next tournament at the discretion of the coaching staff.
A: Each club player and parent is expected to view the club web site and check his or her e-mail on a weekly basis. If an athlete or parent does not have an e-mail address, it is the responsibility of that athlete, or parent, to pair up with another member of the club (and/or team) so that he or she stays informed of all club news.
